This product is for people or families who want to give their digestive and immune systems a boost!

Kefir is an ancient superfood. People who consume it claim they are able to digest all foods more effectively and derive more nutrition efficiently because they increase their population of beneficial gut-microbes. A healthy population of gut-microbes keeps body functions in check including hormone release such as dopamine, improving immune function. Kefir may reduce gut inflammation and ease stomach upset.

We offer this product because it is not easily found and very valuable to our health and vitality. For example, grass-fed milk and butter are more easily found than grass-fed kefir and the benefits of kefir are higher than that of milk or butter. Our kefir offers 19 different strains of microbes including:

  • Kefir grains microflora
  • Kefir yeasts
  • Lactococcus lactis subsp.
  • Leuconostoc species
  • Lactobacillus species
  • Streptococcus thermophilus

Frequently Asked Questions

What is kefir?

Kefir is an ancient eastern European super food. Our version is made with grass-fed whole goat milk with 19 strains of beneficial microbes added. These microbes ferment the natural milk sugar, called lactose, essentially creating a lactose reduced or most likely a lactose free sour milk. These microbes are able to live in your gut for short periods of time. Our bodies require a regular supply of these microbes to keep our body systems running at their best.

How do you pronounce "Kefir"?

Kefir is originally from Turkey. We have heard many pronunciations of the word Kefir. We pronounce it the way one of our long-time Turkish clients says it: “Kef-ear”

What does it taste like?

Our kefir has no sugar added. It is not sweet. It has a slightly effervescent tingle and a refreshing, slightly acidic tang. Many of our clients say it is the most delicious kefir they have ever had!

How thick is it?

The thickness varies depending on the season. Our kefir is thickest in the spring, fall and winter months. May to September, when the weather is warm, and the goats are out on pasture gives us a thinner product.

Why are there clumps on top?

These clumps are our favourite! This is the healthy fats that rise to the top. We do not homogenize our milk so the fats will float over time! Simply shake the bottle to break up the fat clumps or take it off the top for a delicious treat!

How much do I take and when

We recommend taking kefir in small amounts and often. If you are new to kefir, we suggest starting with 1-2 Tbsps. twice per day, with food or without. As your digestive system adjusts, this amount can be increased. ¼ cup or 75ml twice per day is enough to give your body a consistent supply of beneficial microbes.

Is it ok if I drink more?

Yes! It is ok to take more! We have several clients who drink a liter or more per day. Go with the amount that feels right for you.

Does it go bad?

Kefir can keep and taste great for up to 12 weeks or more if properly refrigerated and cared for. (We put a six-week date on the bottle) As long as you keep your bottle of Kefir clean (no dirty utensils in the bottle) it will not go bad as in making you sick. This is a live culture product meaning the microbes are alive and active. The kefir will become more acidic over time. After many weeks, the kefir will develop off-flavours and high acidity. Most people do not enjoy this.

How do I keep it?

Keep kefir in your refrigerator. Between 1 and 4 degrees Celsius is ideal and will give the longest shelf life. The door of your fridge can get warm when opening and closing the door. The main body of your fridge is the better place to keep your bottle of kefir.

How long does it last?

Kefir lasts for weeks, even months when kept in the refrigerator between 1 and 4 degrees C. We put a six week date on our kefir, you can get several weeks past our best before date if you keep it cold!

From our clients:

"I would like to say a big thank you for all you do at River's Edge goat's farm! Quality and not just products seem to be high on your list! A dear friend of mine shared some of your goat's milk Kifer with me when I was not well. The 1st thing I noticed was an increase in my energy and gradual healing from my very acute colitis! One of my sisters, with stage 4 cancer was also given Kefir. Shortly after her blood test showed improvement in her numbers! Keep up the good work."

My dog was so sick. He was vomiting and had diarrhea every day for months. I tried everything my vet recommended, and nothing worked. I gave my dog one Tablespoon of Kefir twice a day as recommended by River’s Edge staff, and he was better in a matter of days! Thank you so much for making such an excellent product.

Shelby - Guelph, ON

I remember the first time our youngest child asked me for sour milk. I could not understand what he wanted. After asking several questions to my then 2-year-old, I realized he wanted kefir for his upset tummy. Five years later our kids still ask for “sour milk”, aka Kefir, to soothe an upset tummy.

Katie - River’s Edge Goat Dairy

Every time my doctor prescribes antibiotics I head to River’s Edge Goat Dairy to stock up on Kefir. My body needs the microbes to keep yeast infections and other antibiotic side effects away.
